To ensure your paint repair blends in perfectly, you'll need to apply a clear coat over the color coat. The rust-through on my blue-green 380SL was hidden by the trim piece way down along the rocker panel. When I took off the trim piece, there was quite a large section, about 2 X 6, pretty much rotted.
