This two-step paint system consists of step one, the basecoat, which is your car’s actual color, and step two, the clearcoat, the specially formulated clear paint that protects the base color and provides the luster and deep shine your vehicle came with when new. When I bought my SVT Lightning, the vermillion red rear step bumper needed replacement. I found a used original bumper but it was silver in color. Instead of $650 (plus cost of painting) for a new bumper, I bought the used bumper for $100. I then bought two 12 oz. cans of vermillion red color and two 12 oz. cans of glossy clear from Automotive Touchup. After wet sanding the old bumper with 600 grit, I primed it and then sprayed several coats of color and several coats of clear. It came out great. You can't really tell that it is not a professional job and the project total cost was only $160.
